The Crown Jewel of Rioja!

Today meeting Marchioness De Riscal, my first Marchioness and getting a touch excited she opened the Wine Cathedral, a wine library that dates back to 1860, including their famous vintages 1933, 35, 38, 45, 58 and 60. What’s more I got to drink my birth year vintage, the first wine from my vintage I have ever tasted. With wines of this age, you don’t trust a nose and go straight to the palate, which is softly textured cedar, honey, tar and truffle and quite firm tannins. For the record the aromas are freshly opened pipe tobacco, black olive and some earthy Rhone like attributes.

The DR3 is a classy wine, chocolatey with a blend of red and black fruits, subtle pepper spices. The oak is in the background and it has a lot of fruit power producing an elegant smooth long red fruited taste.

This post was due to go out on the 25th May to celebrate World Chardonnay Day……My Insta account was hacked…So sharing with you now what I drank on the day.

My choice for this year would be the Adelaide Hills sourced 2021 Tapanapa Tiers 1.5 m. (The 1.5 refers to the vine spacing)
Tapanapa as well as being the 20th-century pioneer of the hills is a remarkably consistent high quality produce.

The aromas are subtle and distinguished cool white stone fruits, discrete oatmeal lees wed to well knit oak. Here they use a "low toast" cooper that gives more white butter or Belgian butter aromas not breakfast toasted white bread. The palate is fine initially then builds well formed fleshy white fruit in the middle palate from the skilful use of lees and oak producing a delicious tension and mineralogy builds complexity.

It’s a very good Chardonnay to cellar with confidence. #chardonnay #winetasting🍷 #countrywine
